Médard des Groseilliers

Médard Chouart Sieur of Groseilliers (* 1618 or 1625, † 1696 ) was a French Ranger and fur traders.

Des Groseilliers was in the 1640s on behalf of Jesuit missionaries around the Lake Huron on the go. 1654-56 he explored the north of present-day Ontario and was told by the Indians of the rich fur areas in the northwest of Lake Superior. Therefore, he set out in 1659 with his brother Pierre -Esprit Radisson there and returned with thousands of skins. However, these were confiscated by the French administration and the two rangers were arrested for " fur trade without a license ."

1669 they therefore turned to the Englishman and led for this the ship Nonsuch by sea in the Hudson Bay, from where you could reach the hunting grounds. Thus, they had found a way to bypass the French controlled territory. They founded on the coast a first base and started to hunt fur-bearing animals and trade. This success prompted the British establishing the Hudson 's Bay Company.

Both Radisson and Groseilliers were the persecuted by the French as traitors. Nevertheless, it was Groseilliers possible to return to New France, where he later led several raids on trading posts of the Hudson's Bay Company. Des Groseilliers died in 1696 in New France.
