Medea statue

The Medea Memorial is a monument in the Georgian port of Batumi on the Europe Square in the center of the old town.

In a slim, clad with white marble base is the designed inspired by the antique bronze statue of Princess Medea Colchian. This presented in the outstretched hand of the Golden Fleece - a symbol of prosperity and happiness of the people.

The statue of Medea acts raised by the color contrast of the slender green - patinated Virgin and the gilded elements of their hairstyle, the ram's coat and a grille at her feet. During the night, the monument and the surrounding facades are illuminated by colored lights. The square is a meeting place for young people and tourists. In the vicinity of the monument there are large public administration buildings, luxury hotels and the town's clock tower.

The monument was inaugurated in July 2007 during a visit of the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. In this context, the Georgian opposition criticized the lack of respect of Medea to Batumi, but especially the high cost of building the monument, which she described as luxurious prestigious building.
