Medenine (Arabic مدنين, Madanin DMG ) is a city in southern Tunisia with 61 705 inhabitants ( 2004). The capital of the province of the same name located in the Djeffara level between the Dahar mountains and the Mediterranean coast to the offshore island of Djerba.

History

In pre-colonial times was an important market town Medenine at the crossroads of major caravan routes and center of the powerful Berber tribe of the Ouerghamma. During the French colonial period Medenine was expanded into a garrison town and a regional administrative center.

Attractions

There used in Medenine a great old town with a complex of 35 Ksour 8000 part six stories arranged barrel-vaulted storerooms ( Ghorfas ). However, this was largely demolished after independence in the course of modernization, which the town was deprived of a possible tourist attraction itself. Only three Ksour are left and are now home to a souvenir market.
