Medford is a city in Middlesex County in the state of Massachusetts a few miles north of Boston on the Mystic River. According to the last census from 2000, 55,765 people live in the city. The city is known in particular by Tufts University. The name means " ford in a meadow " ( Wade in a meadow).
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town area covers a total area of 22.4 square kilometers. 21.1 square kilometers of which are land and 1.3 square miles of water surface. The proportion of water surface on the total area is 5.79 percent.
The towns of Medford and Savannah (Georgia ) each claim the origin of the Christmas classic Jingle Bells for themselves.
