Media of Senegal

The media in Senegal include broadcasters and print media.

Broadcasting

The largest media provider in Senegal is the state radio and television broadcaster Radio Télévision diffusion of Senegal ( RTS). It has a variety of radio and television stations, including regional stations.

Newspapers

Le Soleil is the largest public newspaper and to the government. In parallel, there are also independent daily newspapers, such as Sud quotidien, Walfadjri, Le Matin and Le Quotidien.

Freedom of the Press

Freedom of the press is not guaranteed in Senegal. The Press Freedom Index for 2008 ranks Senegal as " partly free" one. In the ranking of press freedom, the country is listed at number 104. There is no official censorship in Senegal, but journalists are regularly threatened and have to reckon with dissident reporting to prison. For example, Moussa Gueye, the managing editor of the private newspaper L' Exclusif, as well as their owner Pape Moussa Doucar, 2007 was arrested as it is a critical editorial, titled Late outings at the Presidency: The Nocturnal published Escapades of President Wade. As a ground for restricting freedom of the press was given to protect the national security. In addition to the state as repressive Muslim brotherhoods actor play a more significant role in influencing the free press. The leaders have the opportunity to direct the reporting by its enormous impact on the population and its social mediation function.

Democratization

The process of democratization in Senegal is very slow, even more important is the democratization of the media, to further drive the overall process. Without an independent media system there can be no democracy. In recent years, although there was a slight improvement and purely formal freedom of the press should be guaranteed, but the reality is different. Still can not think of an independent press of the question, since journalists intimidated, are set and pursued under pressure.
