Medical and Chirurgical Society of London

The Medical and Chirurgical Society of London was founded in 1805 a London learned society of physicians and surgeons. It existed until 1907, and is one of the predecessor companies of the Royal Society of Medicine.

History

On May 22, 1805 26 members of the Medical Society of London, founded in 1773, who were dissatisfied with the autocratic leadership by its President James Sims ( 1741-1820 ) met. They decided to start their own company, which should serve the purpose of sharing experiences in their field of expertise, the reception of notifications and the establishment of a library.

Its first president was Sir William Saunders ( 1743-1817 ). John Abernethy, William Babington, Sir William Blizard (1743-1835) and John Cooke (1756-1838) was Vice- President, Sir Astley Cooper treasurer and Charles Rochemont Aikin (1775-1847) secretary.

1834, the Company received the Royal Charter and was renamed Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. From 1907 to 1909, the company merged with other specialty societies to form the Royal Society of Medicine.
