Medical Subject Headings

The Medical Subject Headings ( MeSH) is a thesaurus for indexing of books and journal articles in medicine and the life sciences.

The MeSH system is maintained and updated by the United States National Library of Medicine. It is mainly used for the MEDLINE database, which is provided by the system operated by the National Center for Biotechnology Information PubMed Internet portal to the public for free research available.

A German translation of the MeSH is created by DIMDI in Cologne. Translated were all Main Headings, subheadings and all almost all entry terms. The initial vocabulary was expanded by about 6,000 German names.
