Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat [ mɛdəsən HAET ] is a city in the southeast of the province of Alberta in Canada. It is located 300 km southeast of Calgary and Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Lethbridge 's fifth- largest urban agglomeration in Alberta.

Medicine Hat is located in the valley of the South Saskatchewan River, flow into the inside of the City of Seven Persons Creek and Ross Creek. The area has a very dry continental climate with warm summers and cold winters that are mitigated, however, by föhnartige winds ( Chinook ).

The city's name is derived from the Blackfoot word Saamis, which represents the eagle feather that was worn by medicine men in the hat. Medicine Hat was founded in 1883 when the Canadian Pacific Railway discovered a huge natural gas reserves in drilling for water. To date, there is the lighting of the city of gas lamps. 1906 Medicine Hat was an independent city.

A landmark of the city is the Sami tipi, a tribute to the First Nations in Canada. The 65 m high steel structure was made for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and 1991 brought to Medicine Hat.

Important economic factor is the production of natural gas, coal and oil, as well as the mining of raw materials such as clay and sand. In addition, agriculture and industrial production play an important role. 56 km north- west is the Military Base Canadian Forces Base Suffield.
