Mediolanum (Whitchurch)

Mediolanum was a small Roman city, on the site of the present Whitchurch. Mediolanum is a common place name in the Roman world; The name means roughly central location, which is especially true in this case because the place is in the middle of Shropshire level. Mediolanum is located half- way between Castra Devana ( Chester ) and Viroconium ( Wroxeter ).

The town began as a military camp, which was fastened around 75 AD. To 90 AD fired from the military. The following Mediolanum was a civil settlement that stretched mainly along the Roman road. At the beginning there were mainly wooden buildings with evidence of workshops, which stood at some distance from the road. To AD 170 expanded the place and some stone structures were built. One of them had a big yard and was about 83 m long. The function is unknown, but it may well have been a market.

Mediolanum was fortified and inhabited until the fourth century.
