Mediterranean Agreements 1887

The Mediterranean Entente (also: Mediterranean agreements, Orient Triple Alliance ) is an agreement, the UK and Italy, graduating on February 12, 1887 placement of Bismarck. On March 24, 1887 joined Austria - Hungary, on May 4, even Spain accedes to the Convention.

The parties agreed in recognizing the status quo in the Mediterranean. In practice, the agreement against the expansion of Russia in the Balkans and the Straits of the Bosporus and of the Dardanelles was directed. The existence of the Ottoman Empire has been saved. In addition, Italy has strengthened against France.

The agreement Bismarck succeeded to bring the UK closer to the Triple Alliance ( Germany, Austria - Hungary, Italy), without the German Empire itself would become a member of the Mediterranean Entente. However, the agreement soon lost its importance as the UK and Russia annäherten each other. After Wilhelm II had the British alienated by the Kruger telegram, they broke in 1896, the Mediterranean Entente.

Bismarck switching to Mediterranean agreements can also be seen with regard to the German - Russian reinsurance contract. In the secret additional protocol to the reinsurance contract Bismarck Russia had promised support for its expansion efforts. Through the mediation of the Mediterranean Agreement Bismarck violated not de jure against the reinsurance contract, but against the spirit of the Additional Protocol.
