Medvedevo, Mari El Republic

Medwedewo (Russian Медведево, mari Маскасола / Maskasola ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Mari El (Russia) with 16,841 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the middle Volga region. It represents a western suburb of the capital of Republic of Yoshkar -Ola, whose city center is about ten kilometers away.

Medwedewo is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Medwedewo.

History

The village Medwedowo was founded in the second half of the 17th century. In December 1943 Medwedewo administrative center of a newly established Rajons. From the 1960s, the city developed into an industrial and residential suburb of the neighboring city of Yoshkar -Ola. On April 2, 1973 Medwedewo received with simultaneous incorporation of some surrounding villages the status of an urban-type settlement.

Culture and sights

Since 1995, in a Medwedewo Rajon local museum. In 2000, a small zoo was set up.

Economy and infrastructure

In Medwedewo there are companies in the food and light industry and the forestry and construction.

The settlement is located on the railway line Selenodolsk ( station Seljony Dol ) - Yoshkar -Ola - Yaransk ( station name Aksamatowo, 110 route km ) of railway Gorkier. On the northern outskirts of the village the R173 regional road passes, with Kosmodemjansk ( there boat service for Tscheboksarsker Reservoir of the Volga ) connects Yoshkar -Ola in the southwestern part of the Republic and further leads to the M7 highway. After Yoshkar -Ola is city bus and trolley bus.
