Meerbeke

Meerbeke is a borough of the Belgian city of Ninove in the Denderstreek in the province of East Flanders. The site has an area of 10.47 km ².

History

Meerbeke is first documented in 870 mentioned in the Treaty of Meersen. It belonged at the time to Gau Brabant and was owned by the monastery at Nivelles. From 1085/1086 Meerbeke was a part of the rural county of Brabant, which merged in the years 1183/1184 in the Duchy of Brabant.

Under the French rule, the town was added to the Scheldt department, which then rose in 1815 after the Congress of Vienna, in the province of East Flanders.
