Meerut (Hindi: मेरठ, Meerut [me ː rʌʈ ʰ ] ) is a metropolitan city in India. It is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh about 60 kilometers northeast of Delhi. The population is around 1.3 million ( 2011 census ).

Meerut is known as the city where the uprising began in 1857 against the British colonial rulers. Occasion of the revolt against the British was the introduction of new rifles, cartridges which should have been treated with beef tallow and / or lard. The occasion is understandable in that the Hindus cattle are sacred and are among Hindus and Muslims pigs as unclean, and this was only the advanced trigger. The deeper reason lay in the territorial losses and poor social and economic situation.

In Meerut is located with the 1822 consecrated St. John 's Church, the oldest church in North India.
