  • 3.1 encryption
  • 3.2 Disclosure of Data

History

Mega is operated by the company Mega Limited, which to 89.31 % dotcoms belongs wife Mona. CEO since February 7, 2013 Vikram Kumar. He was CEO of InternetNZ, an organization that is committed to the protection of the Internet in New Zealand.

Mega ended on January 19, 2013 at 18:48 Central European Time online, exactly one year after the raid had begun to dotcoms property by the New Zealand police in New Zealand, which resulted in Megas predecessor service Megaupload went by the network and all server and its data were seized worldwide.

Originally, the site should be the domain name " me.ga " use, but the Prime Minister of Gabon took off the address.

Since February 16, 2013 Mega accepted from the reseller BitVoucher the currency Bitcoin and so makes an anonymous payment.

On July 4, the Android app has been released, because the service could not be used in the web browser of Android. On 27 November, the iOS app was released, which allows the customer to purchase Mega Pro via in-app purchase.

On August 9, 2013 Kim Dotcom announced that Mega 2014 will publish a separate, secure, e- mail service. This is to provide users with the possibility to send encrypted e -mails and receive, without running the risk of being monitored by the NSA.

Properties

Mega uses a freemium business model, in which the basic service with 50 GB of storage is offered free of charge. Any additional services, such as more memory or bandwidth are not free.

Encoding

All files are encrypted before uploading using the AES -128 algorithm. On the mega servers are only encrypted files that without the correct encryption password can not be accessed. Since the encryption password is not sent to the mega - servers, files can not be checked for copyright infringement and would thus be from hackers or other users without password protected. When downloading the files it is decrypted locally in the browser again.

Criticism

Encoding

There has been criticism that the encryption passwords would not generate " random enough " and a loss of the account password would have the consequence that all data would be lost.

Furthermore, the infrastructure of the service to be reloaded by JavaScript code and the use of force as insecure encryption algorithm (CBC - MAC) is vulnerable. Mega responded to this criticism with a bonus program for errors found in the encryption, according to which the finder will receive a reward of up to 10,000 €.

Disclosure of Data

According to the terms and conditions are " communication logs, IP addresses, traffic data and information about site usage " ( "Communication logs, traffic data, site usage and other information related to us Supplying the services" ) and " personal information in uploaded data " ( "Any personal information included in data uploaded to our system" ) is stored. These data can be sold to " authorized reseller and service provider" ( "authorized resellers and service providers "). The encryption does not lead to the anonymity of users.
