Meganissi (Greek Mεγανήσι (n. sg. ), Big Island ') is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, which belongs to the archipelago of Tilevoides and with them to the Ionian Islands. At the same time it forms together with Skorpios and a few uninhabited islets an independent municipality (Greek δήμος, Dimos ) within the Regional District of Lefkada Ionian Islands.

The almost 20 km ² island is separated by a 800 meters wide strait from the much larger neighboring island of Lefkas in the West. The port of Nidri on Lefkas is good 7 miles away, the distance to the Greek mainland to the east is about 9 kilometers after Athens 260 km.

Meganissi has an irregular shape, which resembles roughly a "C". It consists of a main located in the north part and a long, extending to the southeast and a few hundred meters narrow tongue of land.

The length is eleven kilometers, the maximum width in the north ( west-east direction) six kilometers. The wooded island is rather hilly and reaches a height of 267 m (according to other sources 297 m).

On the island live according to official figures, nearly one thousand inhabitants, which here, as on many other Greek islands, the number of residents between the summer and the winter season is inferior to strong fluctuations.

The inhabitants are distributed among the two harbors of Vathi and Spartohori as well as the location in the inland village Katomeri. The nearest airport is located in Preveza on the mainland. The two port locations are several times during the day usually by ferry from Nidri on Lefkas. There are bus services between the island towns and the main beaches.

Agriculture plays a diminishing role on Meganissi. There are olive groves, fruit and vegetable growing and animal husbandry. The fishing is due to the overfishing of the surrounding waters falling steadily. The tourism sector is becoming increasingly important. Although the island has been spared from mass tourism, are more and more beds in hotels, apartments and private accommodation available. Although Meganissi has no historical finds and archeological sites, but has some beautiful beaches and several interesting caves. The island is popular with sailors, surfers and divers as well as individual tourists.
