Covad Communications Group, Inc. is a company founded by Charles McMinn and Dhruv Khanna in the 1990's communications company for the U.S. market, with corporate headquarters in San Jose, California.

The name Covad is the abbreviation for Converged Voice and Data. Thus, the corporate purpose of the company should be expressed, namely to transmit voice and data together in a network.

The company is active mainly as a broadband Internet service provider for small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as a DSL provider. After acquiring the company GoBeam 2004 it offers also in the context of Voice over IP ( VoIP) phone services. Covad is a CLEC ( Competitive Local Exchange Carrier ), ie, a communication service provider who is in competition with the dominant telecommunications company in the U.S. market, such as AT & T, Verizon and Qwest.

This competition was mainly produced by the regulation in the telecommunications market during the administration of President Bill Clinton, and expressed in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 ( TA96 ). Since taking office, President George W. Bush in 2000, it is, however, come to a policy change that has ( the regulator Federal Communications Commission ) also found its expression in the telecommunications regulation by the FCC. Since then, the influence of CLECs has waned, that of the dominant telecommunications companies has increased. This also changes the competitive situation for Covad has deteriorated.

Covad has approximately 1,400 employees (as of 2005).

  • Lack of depth in terms of history of the company. Ranging from the near bankruptcy in August 2001, to the acquisition by Platinum Equity in April 2008.
