Meguro, Tokyo

Meguro (Japanese目 黒 区, -ku ) is one of the 23 city wards of Tokyo, capital of Japan.

Geography

Meguro is located between Shibuya in the northeast, Setagaya Ward in the West, Ōta in the south and Shinagawa in the southwest.

The district is primarily a residential area, but also a diplomat quarter, as the embassies of Egypt, Algeria, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Gabon, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Poland, Senegal, Uganda and Uzbekistan, as well as the Honorary General Consulate of Iceland are here.

History

The area of present-day district of Meguro was already in the Stone Age, inhabited the Jōmon, Yayoi and the Kofun period, have such excavations at Higashiyama - Køkkenmøddinger shown.

From the 9th century, come three of the temples and shrines of the district, the Otori Shrine (大鸟 神社, Otori -jinja ), the Meguro Fudoson and the Hogan -ji (法眼 寺). The black eyes ( meguro ) of Fudo statue gave the district its name.

The municipality was created on 1 October 1932, when the Machi Meguro (目 黒 町, machi ) and Hibusuma (碑 衾 町, machi ) were incorporated to Tokyo and summarized to the municipality Meguro.

The Meguro station is not located in Meguro but Shinagawa.

The former Democratic Prefecture MPs Eiji Aoki in 2004 elected mayor of Meguro and last re-elected in 2012. The 36 deputies in the local parliament were last elected in the unified regional elections of 2011.

Ins Prefecture Parliament Meguro elected at the last election in 2013, two Liberal Democrats and one Kōmeitō candidates. For the national House of Representatives Meguro is part of the 5th electoral district of the prefecture, according to the 2012 election the Liberal Democrat Kenji Wakamiya represents.
