Meherrin

The root of the Meherrin is one of the eight recognized by the state of North Carolina in the United States of America Native American tribes, the formal recognition in 1986 was granted by the state. The base includes 557 registered members. The derived from the Iroquois Meherrin live in rural northeastern North Carolina close to the River on the border with Virginia. Seat of the tribe is the place Winton and the tribe settled mainly in and around the " Pleasant Plains / Little California" in Hertford County.

In southern Virginia also lies a small village called Meherrin.
