Meienried is a municipality in the administrative district in the canton of Bern Seeland in Switzerland.

Geography

Meienried is the Seeland, where the Old Aare with the Nidau- Buren - channel flows together. This area is called Häftli. Despite the small size of the community is divided into two parts, the Oberfar and Unterfar. Meienried borders Safnern, Bueren an der Aare, Dotzigen and Scheurenstraße. In the northeast, the municipality a small quarry, Meienriedseeli is called. In summer it is a popular seaside resort since the lake is warm quickly.

Population

Meienried is German ( 93.22 %). A minority speaks French (5.08 %). The population consists of 23 households.

The council consists of five members. In addition to the municipality, there is a civic community together with Scheurenstraße, the civic community Scheurenstraße - Meienried.

Economy

The economy Meienrieds consists of five peasant holdings, which together employ 13 people. The service sector offers an additional four jobs.

History

Before the first Jura waters correction Meienried was particularly hard hit by flooding. At that time the Aare flowing here along with the Zihl. The two parts of the village originated in two locations of ferries, Meienried was a transport hub.

In the village part Unterfar the former tavern is the galley, which was built around 1770. Johann Rudolf Schneider, one of the first Hauptinitianten Jura water correction was born in 1804 in this house. He later became the Grand Council and the National Council and was from 1838 to 1850 member of the Berne government.
