Meijer de Haan

Meijer Isaac de Haan (also Meyer de Haan, born April 14, 1852 in Amsterdam, † October 24, 1895 there ), was a Dutch painter.

Life

Meijer de Haan was born into a wealthy Jewish family of entrepreneurs in Amsterdam. In 1888 he went to Paris to further his studies of painting. He lived for several months with the art dealer Theo van Gogh. There he met Camille Pissarro and Paul Gauguin know. In Pont -Aven in Brittany, he worked with the artists of the School of Pont -Aven. The relationship with his colleague Gauguin was close, he helped him more often due to financial hardships. To escape the hustle and bustle of this place, he retired in 1889 with Gauguin in the neighboring village of Le Pouldu back to where they plage located in the Hotel Cafe Buvette du einmieteten and a dining room they immediately sided with frescoes. De Haan began a relationship with the owner, Marie Henry, out of a daughter, Ida emerged. Here was also the self-portrait. Since his family stopped the financial support and he could not go with Gauguin in Tahiti, he returned, for health reasons, 1891 back to Amsterdam. Although he never saw again Marie Henry in his life, he bequeathed his entire works painted in France.
