Meinhard, Duke of Carinthia

Meinhard II (c. 1238; † November 1, 1295 in Greifenburg ) from the family of Meinhardiner was Count (as Meinhard IV ) of Gorizia ( 1258-1267 ) and Tyrol, Duke of Carinthia ( 1286-1295 ) and Lord of the deposit Duchy of Carniola and the Windisch Mark. He was one of the most important rulers of the 13th century and the founder of Tyrol as an independent country.

As the son of Count Meinhard I fell at the County of Tyrol by inheritance in 1271. His brother Albert I received the possessions in Friuli, Istria, Carinthia and in Val Pusteria.

He became famous for coining the " Zwainzigers ," the first German large silver coin that has been widely imitated. He supported Rudolph I of Habsburg in the dispute with King Ottokar II of Bohemia and was for 1286 raised to the imperial princes and invested with the Duchy of Carinthia.

Together with his wife, Elisabeth of Bavaria, the Hohenstaufen Conrad IV 's widow, he founded in 1284 the Cistercian monastery of Stams in Tyrol, where he also found his grave. His daughter Elizabeth married Albert I, King of Germany of the years 1298 to 1308, and became the ancestress of all subsequent Habsburgs. He is regarded as the real founder of the Tyrol by his submission of the bishoprics of Trent and Brixen.
