Meinhard I, Count of Gorizia-Tyrol

Meinhard I von Tirol ( Meinhard III of Gorizia. ) ( * Before 17 January 1194; † July 22, 1258 ) from the family of Meinhardiner was Count of Gorizia and Istria ( 1220-1258 ) and Count of Tyrol ( 1253-1258 ) and Vogt of Aquileia, Trento, Brixen and Bolzano.

Life

He was the son of Count Engelbert III. of Gorizia († 1220 ) and Mathilde von Andechs, daughter of Count Berthold III. († 1188 ).

Meinhard was Staufer - partisan, was built by Emperor Frederick II in 1246 as governor of Styria and used in 1250 as governor of Austria, but soon expelled from Przemysl Otakar II. He tried supremacy in Carinthia to conquer, but failed with his ally and father- Count Albert of Tyrol in 1252 Reaching castle against Duke Bernhard of Carinthia and his son Philip, Elect of Salzburg. In the Peace of Lieserhofen he had his sons, Meinhard and Albert hostage filters ( they had to spend several years on HOHENWERFEN ), pay high fines and lost important possessions in Carinthia.

As the husband of the heiress of Tyrol - Adelheid, he took over at the death of Albert of Tyrol in 1253 its possessions and shared them with Gebhard von Hirschberg ( † 1275 ), where Meinhard Southern Tyrol fell to with Merano. 1256 he acquired also the fief of the Bishopric of Trento. This Meinhard had united the main property of the Counts of Appiano, of Ultimo and by Tyrol in his hand.

He died in 1258 and is buried in the Tirol Castle.

Family

Meinhard was (from about 1237 ) married to Adelheid († 1279 ), daughter of Count Albert III. of Tyrol ( † 1253 ).
