History

Until 1900

In 1838 was the first plan for the construction of a railway station in Meiningen under the first project of a railway line through the Werra. The web site should lie northwest of the old town at the foot of the mountain men originally. The project fell through at first due to lack of concessions. Until 20 years later, the station was inaugurated at the opening of the Werrabahn on November 2, 1858 at its present location after a construction period of two years. The station was the seat of the Werra Railway Company, which won the concession for the construction and operation of the Werrabahn. Even when he was opening the railway station from the reception building and six other buildings, including a locomotive shed with workshop and coke, cars and goods shed. To meet the ever increasing demand for maintenance and repair work on the vehicle park of justice Werrabahn, was begun in 1863 opposite the reception building an operational workshop with roundhouse and turntable.

On December 15, 1874, the Royal Bavarian State Railways took over the rail line Schweinfurt -Meiningen in operation. They built south of the existing station of Werrabahn leaning the independent Bayerischer Bahnhof as a terminal station with station building, platforms, locomotive shed with five stalls, turntable and other track systems. This nearly doubled the railway land and now extended over 1300 meters between the two interlocking driveway. As the number of tracks increased at the railroad crossing in St. Mary's Road from two to ten, a traffic control with barriers was no longer reasonable. Thus, a 100 -meter-long road tunnel was built, which passes under the railway tracks and station platforms and since then the city center and parts Oststadt together. The construction of the Bavarian railway station and the time required for the reduction of the tunneling Marie road large topographic changes were needed in the following road network and in the wider environment of the station. So also the urban road network had east of railway property are rearranged and there were to build more artificial structures.

With the opening of the railway line Neudietendorf - Ritschenhausen 1884, the connection to the remote station received train Berlin -Erfurt- Würzburg- Stuttgart. 1895 took over the Prussian State Railways Werrabahn and its railway facilities were the Prussian railway station.

Known as the addition operation workshop workshop evolved since its inception to 1900 into a coherent hall complex of 200 meters in length with 26 locomotive stalls and a series of workshops and other facilities. She was raised in 1902 to a major workshop. The capacity of the main workshop soon came to their limits, so the Prussian State Railways 1914, built one kilometer north of the station, a new main workshop, the later " RAW Meiningen " and today Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works. The old main workshop was then dismantled and transformed into something a railway depot.
