Meir (Antwerp)

The Meir is one of the major shopping streets in the Belgian city of Antwerp.

Together with the De Keyserlei, the Teniersplaats and Leysstraat is the Meir, the connection between the Central Station and the historic city center of Antwerp.

The Meir is a continuous pedestrian and one of the major commercial streets in Antwerp. In addition to small shops, the branches of large fashion chains series seamlessly together. Most shops are housed in historical buildings that line the street. On the Meir itself is the (Royal ) Paleis op de Meir and the Stadtfestsaal Antwerp. Both have been recently refurbished and the Stadsfeestzaal has been transformed into a luxury shopping center. From Meir branches the Wapper, starting with the Rubens House.

The name Meir is derived from the word seas ( sea). Previously, Meir was a so-called timber sea. This is a place that is kept wet on the wood, which is intended for the furniture.
