Meir Yitzhak Halevi

Meir Yitzhak Halevi ( Ivrit: מאיר יצחק - הלוי; born 1953 in Jerusalem) is an Israeli politician who currently has served as mayor of Eilat.

Life

Halevi was born in 1953 in Jerusalem and Yemeni origin; his grandfather was the Chief Rabbi of Yemen.

He retired after 1978 to Eilat and led the community center in the city center. In 1993 he was elected to the City Council and ran in 1998 unsuccessfully for mayor. Between 1998 and 2003 he was Leader of the Opposition in the Council. He won the local elections in 2003 and joined this new party after the founding of Kadima in. In the local elections of November 2008 Halevi came against two former Mayor Gabi Kadosh and Rafi Hochman, and the Likud candidate Robert Sibony on, received 50 % of the votes and could thus remain in office.

When it was founded Kadima Halevi was one of those mayors in Israel that broke away from the Likud party. He was one of the initiators of the action " City without Violence", the success of which is controversial as a national project.
