Meitei (also Meithei or Meiteilon ) is the predominant language in the Indian state of Manipur. It is the official language and is considered as a factor of integration of the various ethnic groups of the region. There are about 1.5 million native speakers, some speakers there are also distributed to the surrounding states of India, and Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Meitei has been recognized in 1992 as the national language of Manipur and added to the list of registered national languages of India. It belongs to the Tibeto - Burmese languages and is now taught at universities in India.
Until the 18th century the language was written with your own characters in Meetei - Mayek. Then the Bengali script has been adopted, which is still in use today. However, there are efforts to revive the Meetei - Mayek font.
