Mel Ott

Melvin Thomas " Mel" Ott ( born March 2, 1909 in Gretna, Louisiana, † November 21, 1958 in New Orleans), nicknamed "Master Melvin ", was a Major League Baseball right fielder.

Ott played his entire career for the New York Giants ( 1926-1947 ). He was the first player in the National League, who hit over 500 home runs. 1951 Mel Ott was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His jersey number "4" is no longer awarded to a player the Giants since 1949. He participated in 12 All-Star games. Mel Ott died at the age of 49 years in New Orleans as the result of a car accident.

In the movie Field of Dreams (1989 ) with Kevin Costner Mel Ott was one of the dead Baseball Stars on Ray Kinsella's cornfield. 2006 dedicated the American Postal Administration Mel Ott, a special stamp.
