The Myrtenheiden ( Melaleuca ) are a genus of flowering plants in the myrtle family ( Myrtaceae ). Some species of this genus - but also from the genera Baeckea, Kunzea and Leptospermum - are called tea tree. Melaleuca is from the Greek words for " black " and "white" derived and refers to the typical bark.

The most important tea-tree species occurring in Australia is the Australian tea tree ( Melaleuca alternifolia ), from which mainly the tea tree oil is obtained. More tea tree species eg Melaleuca Melaleuca viridiflora and leucadendra, are distilled from which also therapeutically useful oils.
