For the purposes of Deuteronomy it is considered a duty of the community to make the children the basics of Jewish tradition familiar. This practice is mentioned in the Talmud, according to which children's teachers are to be used, not only to address the illiteracy, but to keep very low. Traditionally, the teaching of Melamed was carried out in a cheder, where usually only the Torah and Talmud were taught.

In particular, the Melamdim enjoyed from Poland to 1648 high reputation. From this time they migrated from their native country, to look for work, which was detrimental to their status.
