Melanosis coli

As melanosis coli ( synonym: pseudomelanosis coli) ( gr Melanos "black"; Latin colon " colon " ) is called a harmless, patchy darkening of the colonic mucosa. It is based on an increased pigmentation of submucosa. Only since the widespread use of colonoscopy, this finding is documented. There is no evidence of association with pathological processes.

The most common cause is seen in the long-term use of laxatives. It should not be confused melanosis coli with the Peutz -Jeghers syndrome, which can also lead to hyperpigmentation of the gastrointestinal tract.
