Melbourne Airport ( Engl Melbourne Airport, IATA Code: MEL; ICAO code: YMML ) is an international airport located 22 km north-west of Melbourne in the suburb of Tullamarine, Victoria ( Australia). In addition to the Melbourne Airport - also known as Tullamarine Airport - there are in the Melbourne area has three other smaller airports: Avalon Airport near Geelong, the old Essendon Airport and Moorabbin Airport south-southeast of downtown.

The airport has two start and runways and four terminals. It is open around the clock.

History

Melbourne Airport was opened on 1 July 1970 to replace the abutting its capacity limits Essendon airport. The new airport was built a few kilometers further out.

In 1997, the airport was privatized. Here, the original name Tullamarine Airport was indeed abandoned in favor of Melbourne Airport, but the former name is still used in flight plans of some airlines. It is the first airport in Australia that has been modified for the Airbus A380.

Airport facilities

Melbourne Airport has four terminals:

  • T1 is only used by Qantas and Jetstar and has 22 gates
  • T2 is the International Terminal and has 16 gates. This terminal is used, among other things, Qantas, Jetstar, Emirates and Singapore Airlines
  • T3 is used for domestic flights of other airlines such as Virgin Australia or REX
  • T4 is only used by the low cost airline Tiger Airways Australia
