Melchor Rodríguez García

Melchor Rodríguez García ( * May 30, 1893 in Seville, † February 14, 1972 in Madrid) was a Spanish anarchist politicians. He was known as El ángel rojo ( in German: The Red Angel ) is known. Rodríguez García had during the Spanish Civil War, since November 10, 1936 in Madrid responsibility for prisons and preserved many political prisoners, supporters of the Nationalists, from death by lynching. Through the intercession of former prisoners such as General Agustín Muñoz Grandes, who had been released after the seizure of power by Francisco Franco, he was not sentenced to death, but to 20 years in prison, of which he served five years. He had been employed by the Iberian Anarchist Federation as an alderman and was on February 28, 1939 Mayor of Madrid, but only to make controlled the surrender of the city to the victorious fascists.
