Melendugno

Melendugno is a Southeast Italian municipality ( comune ) with 9675 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipality ( or its main town ) is located about 17 kilometers southwest of Lecce. The community lies with the towns of San Foca and Torre dell'Orso directly on the Adriatic Sea. Melendugno is located in the middle to southern Salento.

History

From the Bronze Age dolmens many have survived. In ancient times settled the Messapians. Maybe lay here or near the settlement Thuria Sallentinum. With Roca ( Nuova), a fortress was built by the Count of Lecce in the late Middle Ages (14th century).

Since 2001 the church has the title of Città (City).
