Meletius of Antioch

Meletius of Antioch ( † May 381 in Constantinople Opel ) was 360-381 Patriarch of Antioch and caused the schism Meletianische named after him before he became the leader of the so-called Jungnizäner.

Life

Meletius came from Melitene. He was during the Arian disputes to the group of Homöer, which was led by Acacius of Caesarea and was 358 bishop of Sebaste. As a successor to the popular Eustathius of Sebaste to Meletius but could not enforce and soon had to give up the office. 360 Meletius was ordained bishop of Antioch, where he followed the strict Arians Eudoxius. When he Reserve left its followers in office or resumed in this, he was again relieved of Constantius II of his duties and replaced by Euzoius.

Despite his exile to Armenia succeeded Meletius to operate his reinstatement, which finally took place 362 under Julian. A reconciliation with the Group of Nizäner under Paulinus of Antioch failed when Lucifer of Calaris those same Paulinus consecrated a bishop, and thus the later so-called Meletianische schism triggered, which lasted until 413 (not to be confused with the schism of Meletius by Lycopolis is ), even if Meletius himself Emperor Valens several more times ( should be banished 365-367 and 371/372 bis 378). Neither the Tome ad Antiochenos of Athanasius of Alexandria nor the commitment of Basil of Caesarea was able to bring about the reconciliation.

Under Emperor Gratian exile was ended and Meletius used again in his office. The recognition of Paulinus (and Rome ) remained true to last for a Nicene confession to him. Nevertheless, Meletius was promoted to leader of the so-called Jungnizäner now. 381 He then led the second ecumenical council, the first Council of Constantinople Opel, during his participation he died then. His body was transferred back in a solemn train to Antioch and buried beside the relics of the martyr and bishop Babylas. He was succeeded Flavian I, who was finally recognized 394 of Theophilus of Alexandria and 399 by Pope Anastasius I.. The Meletianische schism applies but only with Alexandros I., 414 the Patriarch was overcome.
