Melica transsilvanica

The Transylvanian Melick ( Melica transsilvanica ) is a species in the genus Perlgräser ( Melica ) and belongs to the family of grasses.

Description

The Transylvanian Melick is a perennial, clumps forming grass. It is 50 to 90 cm high and its stalks are usually arched, overhanging. Each blade includes 3-7 nodes; the lower leaf sheaths are usually densely hairy and long, the upper bald. The ligule is a 2 to 4 mm long membranous pointed hem. The leaves are usually spread out flat, they are 2-5 mm wide and distinctly keeled hand by the prominent midrib.

The flower spike is 5-8 cm long and 1-2 cm wide; it is dense and its major axis is via the numerous, 12 to 25 ( to 50) spikelets covered ( unlike Melica ciliata ). Below the panicle are zwie to three often provided with a scale node. The spikelet consists of one to two fertile and sterile florets zwie to three, it is 5.5 to 7 (up to 8) mm long. The lemma of the lowest floret is bald on the back, but busy at the edge with 3 to 4 mm long eyelashes; it is yellow-green and red-brown at the top often.

The Transylvanian Melick blooms from June to July and here about two weeks later than the similar Eyelash Melick ( Melica ciliata ).

Occurrence

The distribution area is in Europe Central and Eastern Europe, it is enough west to France. In Asia, it is enough east to the Urals, the Caucasus and Siberia and south to Turkey and Iran. It comes in Central Europe usually rare and rises from the level to about 1680 m on.

The Transylvanian Melick thrives on summer warm, dry, calcareous stone floors, like on limestone and grows in ruderal semi-dry grasslands ( couch grass dry grass) or in fringe communities lights bushes.
