Melica

Eyelash Melick, Nick Perlgras and Einblütiges Melick

The Perlgräser ( Melica ) are a genus of the family of grasses, which comprises about 96 species.

Description

The Perlgräser are persistent and form clumps or loose grass, often with underground runners. The stalks are up to 1 m high and are unbranched in the vegetative area; the nodes and internodes are mostly bare. The leaves are flat or folded and up to 30 cm long, the ligule is a membranous hem that can be very short though.

The inflorescence is a terminal panicle or raceme. Often, the primary branches of the inflorescence are but at the axis and so the panicle in outline is cylindrical. Rare but it is also spread (eg Melica uniflora ). The spikelets contain one to seven fertile flowers and at the top usually still more sterile flowers. The glumes are both almost the same, and often about as long as the spikelet. The lemmas of the fertile flowers are 7 to 13 - annoying, bald or hairy on the edge, on the upper edge rounded or pointed, but usually without an awn (rarely up to 12 mm long awned ). The palea are two annoying and shorter or as long as the lemmas. The number of stamens is usually three. The caryopses are bald.

Occurrence

The Perlgräser occur in the temperate zones of the world, but absent in Australia. There are many plants of the forests, but other species colonize light open places.
