The Melilla Airport ( MLN IATA code, ICAO code GEML, Spanish Aeropuerto de Melilla) is used to supply the Spanish enclave of Melilla on air transport and is located three kilometers from the city center.

History

The airport was built in 1967 and opened in 1969. Its construction was necessary because the Tauima formerly located in Protectorate Airport (now Nador Airport ), which was used to transport links Melilla, not found in Spanish territory since the declaration of independence of Morocco in 1956. This has had significant consequences for the passengers who fly on their journey to or from Melilla on Tauima; among others, had each transport between the airport and the exclave be made in sealed buses to prevent an official entry to Morocco.

This situation ended only when Melilla got its own airport for civilian intra Spanish and international flights. First, the airline Spantax offered three times a day to connect to Malaga; from 1974, after extension of the start and runways, the airport has also been used for charter flights. Over the years numerous upgrades and technical and logistical facilities joined that are still not completed; among other things, an extension of the parking capacity and renovation of the passenger and cargo terminals are currently being made.
