Melinda Schwegmann

Melinda B. Schwegmann ( born October 25, 1946 in Austin, Texas) is an American politician. Between 1992 and 1996 she was Deputy Governor of the State of Louisiana.

Career

Melinda Schwegmann first worked as a teacher and in the real estate industry. She studied at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and at the University of New Orleans. Politically, she joined initially to the Democratic Party. She was president of an organization for animal welfare ( Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ). She was also a board member of Schwegmann Giant Supermarket Chain, a supermarket chain in the family of her husband.

Schwegmann was elected in 1991 on the side of Edwin Edwards to Vice Governor of Louisiana. This office she held between 1992 and 1996. Yet she was Deputy Governor. During this time she was primarily responsible for the fields of culture and tourism. In 1995, she ran unsuccessfully for the governorship. Subsequently, she was elected to the House of Representatives of Louisiana, where it remained from 1997 to 2004. She sat down at this time for more rights for homosexuals. In 2003, she joined the Republicans. In the same year, she unsuccessfully sought a return to the Office of the Deputy Governor. Melinda Schwegmann is married and the mother of three children.
