Melipilla is a city in the middle of Chile. It is located in Region Metropolitana. It has 63,100 inhabitants (as of 2005).

Geography and climate

The city lies about 60 km west of Santiago de Chile. It is the capital of the province Melipilla. It is bordered by the Coast Mountains to the north, on the northeast by the Chacabuco province, on the east by the province of Santiago and to the southeast by the province Talagante. It is about 170 meters above sea level. Near the town of Río Maipo flows.

Melipilla bordering the valleys of Valle de estero Puangue to the Valle de Alhué. The area is criss-crossed by granite formations that originate from earlier volcanic eruptions. In fall between 500 and 800 mm of rain.

History

The city was founded on 11 October 1742 by Governor José Antonio Manso de Velasco under the name of San José de Logroño. It was not until 200 years later, the city was renamed in Melipilla. On 20 December 1870 they received a town charter. On April 1, 1980, it became the capital of the homonymous province.

Attractions

Near the city Pomaire is a pottery village. In the area Curacaví you can buy traditional images of the Vendimia culture. On the La Ruta del Queso, a kind of sightseeing, you can experience the city and region directly. Here visits are provided by agricultural facilities, venues and cultural sites.

Economy

Melipilla is a modern industrial town and a service center. The surrounding area is dominated by agriculture and mining. In the mines of copper and gold is mined.
