Melissano

Melissano is a Southeast Italian municipality ( comune ) with 7338 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipality is situated approximately 43 km south-southwest of Lecce in southern Salento. The shortest route to the Mediterranean Sea ( Gulf of Taranto ) is 8 kilometers to the west.

History

The village is first mentioned in 1269. The place has until the end of feudalism (1806 ) less than 500 inhabitants. By the 19th century, a small flowering begins. Since 2003, the city holds the title città (city).

Traffic

Through the community, the Strada Statale 274 SALENTINA Meridional of Gallipoli ( Gulf of Taranto ) leads to Santa Maria di Leuca (part of Castrignano del Capo on the Ionian Sea ). A train station is on the non-electrified route from Gallipoli to Casarano.

Community partnerships

Melissano maintains since 2000 a partnership with the Polish community Ogrodzieniec in the Silesian Voivodeship and an intra- Italian partnership with the community Verghereto in the province of Forli -Cesena.
