Melrose House

The Melrose House ( Afrikaans: Melrose Huis ) was built as a Victorian-style mansion in the South African capital Pretoria. It stands opposite the Burger Park in Jacob Maré Street 275

The house was built in 1884-1886 by the haulier George Jesse Hyse. During the Second Boer War it was seized by the British. The British commander Lord Roberts and his successor Lord Kitchener taken up residence here.

Finally, the peace treaty between the British and the Boers was signed on 31 May 1902 in a dining room. Thus ended the Second Boer War.

Today, the Melrose House is a museum, where one can visit from this period authentic English furniture from the 19th century, porcelain and many other accessories. Furthermore, concerts, exhibitions and other events are held here regularly.
