Melville Castle

Melville Castle is a three-story neo-Gothic mansion. It is located about 2 km south-west of Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland, close to the River North Esk

A former residential tower on the same site was demolished to make the current building space. Melville Castle was built in 1786-1791 by James Playfair for Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville.

The original tower house was one of the Melville family before it passed into the possession of Sir John Ross in the 14th century. Buildings and land changed later variously the owner before they were sold in 1705 to David Rennie. Through the marriage of his daughter, it came into the possession of Henry Dundas.

The building stood empty since the 1980s, but was later (again) restored as a hotel.
