Membakut

Federal State

Membakut is a small town and a sub-district in the west of the Malaysian state of Sabah. Membakut located in the Interior Division, about 70 kilometers south of the state capital Kota Kinabalu. Administratively, it belongs to the Beaufort.

Origin of the name

The name is derived from Membakut Bakut, which means in the local dialect bruneischen Fort. The prefix mem makes the noun a verb, so that Membakut can be translated as " make a fortress " with.

Demography

The population of the town is, according to the last census, 516 inhabitants and is composed predominantly of bruneischen Malay, Kadazan - Dusun, Paitan, Javanese, Chinese and Bisaya together. To the established on April 7, 1977 sub-district Membakut include 38 villages. The total population of the sub-district is, according to the local government an estimated 21,900 inhabitants, spread over 138 km ² area.

History

Membakut was an independent territory within the Brunei Jajahan system. It was 1879 official Apanage ( kuripan ) of Wazir Pengiran Pemanca, who had to manage the area by a Brunei nobles, Pengiran Maharaja Lela. Membakut was acquired in 1900 by the North Borneo Chartered Company and incorporated in the State of British North Borneo.

The beginnings of Membakut go back to a village which was about 5 miles from the coast in an area called Bua. The now known as Kampung Brunei village is part of Mukim Bandau ( see below). The later naming of the village and the renaming of the area and the river to " Membakut " was carried out by the influential chief Haji Saman OKK bin Mohd Yaakub.

The development of today's historic center was followed by the construction of the railway line from Beaufort to Jesselton beginning of the 20th century. In the years 1920-1930 a first series of traditional wooden shophouses was built, which is oriented towards the railway line and space for the tamu, the weekly market offered. In the years after 1910 had already started the construction of Pei Yin Primary School.

Historic architecture

Membakut one of the cities along the west coast, the historic building has been preserved in parts today. These include

  • The two west of the railway line local shop sells houses and a workshop complex from the period before the Second World War,
  • One east of the railway line located shop house from the 1950s,
  • The historical Pei Yin Primary School,
  • The Blue House, probably the former home of a teacher and
  • A house colonial style, which is one of the oldest houses of the west coast (built approximately 1913-1916 ).

Another, east of the railway line located shophouse fell in the spring of 2011 in a fire.

Economy

The area around Membakut is agricultural. The majority of the population is in the cultivation of rice and the cultivation of natural rubber trees and oil palms worked or earned a livelihood in fishing.

Infrastructure

Membakut is connected with a breakpoint at the railway Kota Kinabalu - Tenom Sabah State Railway.

Policy

Membakut part of the constituency P.176 ( Kimani ) and is represented in the Malaysian Parliament by YB Datuk Anifah Hj Aman Ahli. In the Legislative Assembly of Sabah ( Dewan Negeri Sabah Undangan ) is the sub-district by YB Datuk Hj Mohd. Arifin Mohd Arif Adun represented by the constituency Membakut N.24.

Local Government

Pejabat Daerah Kecil Membakut

The local government has its headquarters in ( Mal. ) Pejabat Daerah Kecil Membakut, which means " Office of the sub-district " means. The sub-district was officially created on April 7, 1977, resided under the supervision of Assistant District Officer Hj Ahmad Ibrahim initially in an older building. From 1978 to 1979, the present office building was erected and dedicated on October 28, 1979 by the then Chief Minister of Sabah Harris Salleh.

Division of the sub-district

The sub-district Membakut is divided into three municipalities ( Mukim ):

  • Mukim I ( Pimping / Binsulok ) with the settlements ( kampung ) Pimping, According Pimping, Pimping Tengah, Ulu Pimping, Pimping Paya, Tambing Pimping, Batung, Pisang, Saga Saga, Rumah Lama, Gala, Tukong, Belandas, Gan - Dawari, Mandaya, Sijamban, Sitamu Kuning, Madang, Terusan, Binsulok, According Binsulok, Padang Binsulok, Ulu Binsulok, Seberang, Mantabawan and Likas.
  • Mukim II ( Bandau ) with the settlements ( kampung ) Bandau, Pamparingan, Piao, Laganggon, Budak, Bawan, Imbahaton, Kebuluan, Manggis, Sumbiling, Kabuh, Saliban, Bahab, kulintangan, Tamalang, Kambuangon, Pinopok, Luba Luba, Sungai Thus, Limbutong, Kumpat, Kilau, Dakutan, Laputong, Libubon, Kampuluan, Tandoi, Gana, Binubang, Kinanap, Tamoi, Limadang, Labak, Matunjong, Kayai, Dindong, Bangkawat, Jambo, Gapu, Takapan, Gassan, Brunei and Gangas.
  • Mukim III ( Mawao ) with the settlements ( kampung ) Tandian, Piasau, Dungau, Tahak, Bingkulas, Mandangin, Papas, Rancangan Mawao, Limpayau, Lampijas, Jambatan Baru, Mawao sound, Layun, Mawao Ulu, Tiong Baru, Kiulu Baru, Lumat, Lintap, Mandaya, Lampoon and Bungar.
  • Mukim IV ( Bambangan ) with the settlements ( kampung ) Baitam, Sinoko, sindok, Bambangan, Lumantak, Lembah Poring, Poring Tengah, Paung Maragang, Angitan, Poring Maragang, Inantul, Bambangan Ulu, Pusak and Tamalang / Penopok.
