MemoQ

MemoQ is a translation tool (CAT ), which has similar Déjà Vu, Trados or Wordfast Pro has its own user interface and database-driven translations possible.

Initiator and developer of the program is the Hungarian Kilgray.

Since 2009 Kilgray organized every spring a conference in Budapest under the title memoQfest, which deals with various economic and technical aspects of the translation industry.

  • 2.1 two-column Rich Text Format
  • 2.2 Working with the Server

Versions

The various versions of memoQ each comprise a number of versions, so that, for example, speak of a version 5.0.56. The updates are made irregularly, so there are no major service packs as with other products. This update can optionally automatically after exiting the program.

A few weeks before the release of new version levels a voluntary participation in the beta program is possible.

All references in this section are limited to the client version.

MemoQ 2

Version 2.0 is the first "official" version. It was published in January 2007 and has a QA - Add- in for quality assurance.

MemoQ version 2.1 in May 2007 has context-sensitive TM entries or so-called " 101 % matches ", where context is the preceding or following segment. Segments in the translation column can now be locked, also an automatic import / export folder structure including subfolders is possible. Export Rules for Setting file names can be specified.

In addition to supporting bilingual RTF documents, brought to the market in November 2007 Version 2.2 can create views, ie multiple documents (even different formats ) can be joined together in one view and translated together without having to open these documents individually. Version 2.3 (March 2008) expanded the program to a live preview of the translation document ( for some formats).

MemoQ 3

In September 2008, Version 3.0 was released. What was new was the updating of documents thanks to bilingual tabular Rich Text Format. This document can be corrected in Word and re-imported. Other innovations included the complete XLIFF support, spell checking with Hunspell ( as an alternative to MS Office), a new extended term database and filter by segment status.

Version 3.2 (November 2008 ) improved the insertion of fragments and provides AutoCorrect lists for automatic correction of typos. A few months later (March 2009 ) resulted in version 3.5, the automatic concordance search LSC, as well as automatic placeholder in the concordance search. There are also a STAR Transit and a PPTX filter and the XML preview.

The latest version of this series ( 3.6 by September 2009) supports 64 bit operating systems and offers a docx filter and floating text import from PDF files.

MemoQ 4

Version 4.0 was released on 1 February 2010. The QA - Add- in is now an integral part of the program. Other significant changes are in addition to the redesigned user interface and the newly programmed text editor, advanced server functions ( passing parameters and settings documents, TM and terminology beyond ).

On 22 October 2010 Version 4.5 came out. In addition to the newly programmed TM engine focused on the improved alignment of existing documents couples and LiveDocs function for use mono and bilingual reference documents.

MemoQ 5

  • Termextrahierung from documents and translation memories

  • Cascading filter function (eg set in Excel HTML code )
  • TXML filter for Wordfast
  • Integration of Google Translate API v2, MyMemory and TAUS

MemoQ 6

Supported file formats

MemoQ can handle include the following formats: (. * Properties ) (*. Resx) MS Office files, XLIFF, ttx, SDLXLIFF, text, XML, HTML, OpenOffice, Java, Windows NET, TXML ( Wordfast ), Adobe Indesign, Adobe FrameMaker, authorit, Typo 3, MS Visio.

With memoQ version 5.0 is fully compatible with both document formats of Trados 2007 and 2009 ( ttx and SDLXLIFF files) as well as to Wordfast ( TXML ). Installations in virtual environments such as Parallels are officially supported by the manufacturer. Moreover, emphasis is placed on compatibility with voice recognition software.

Due to the openness to external exchange formats memoQ could conquer large market share, especially in freelancers and small agencies.

Two-column Rich Text Format

A special feature is the two-column Rich Text Format. This translation documents and views are exported in a format that is displayed with Office programs, can be edited and printed. With this format, translators can be involved in projects that do not use CAT program.

Déjà Vu has been longer at a similar function. In SDL Trados, this sequence - be tracked via a plug-in - but more cumbersome.

Working with the Server

The server version was in early versions of memoQ a unique feature; now these functions are at least partially offered by other programs. There is for the user of the client different types of server projects:

  • The user is editing documents locally on their computer, but receives from its customers access to online resources ( mostly TM).
  • A data packet of the client is opened locally on the computer. While he worked on the project locally, there is a link to an online TM (or optionally TB). After completion of the project, the translator conveys a MQBACK file.
  • The processing is done completely online: Both the document and all resources are located on the customer's server.

In all cases, the translator can own additional local resources use (which are not transmitted as MQBACK file with a return ). With full on-line projects ( Case 3 ) can restrict file access ( exporting documents and TM ) of the customer.

Licenses

A license for memoQ currently costs € 620 and includes three years of support and upgrades to all new versions of the program. An extension will cost € 124 per year. In addition to the paid version translator pro is a free version with limited functionality is offered 4free.

Unlike other providers, there are at Kilgray no certification programs for users. In contrast, training videos and recorded webinars are available free of charge on the Company's website.

Timely support is offered in addition to the support of the manufacturer on a Yahoo! discussion group ( in English ) on the user and the manufacturer's employees are active.

Criticisms

Among the criticisms of memoQ included in previous versions, the relatively late introduction of the filter for OpenOffice and docx and pptx files. In addition, must comply with server projects, the program version of the server and accessing it local, single -user version.
