Memor

Memor ( † about 262 ) was a Roman- Moorish rebel who is said to have 262 planned a rebellion against Emperor Gallienus.

Life

Memor came from North Africa and was responsible for the supply Rome with grain from Egypt. Memor fate was closely entangled with the political events in the east of the empire after Valerian was captured by the Persians in 260. Valerian's son Gallienus, who was in the capital, then took power. The troops stationed in the east, but with the thought Macriani ( Macrianus Maior, Macrianus Minor and Quietus ) to determine their own emperor. However, this failed in their march towards Rome and were killed.

Only shortly after Gallienus sent troops to the East, ( including Memor ) and other usurpers should extinguish the still present former supporters of Macriani. An army under the command of Aurelius Theodotus initially took the governor of Egypt, Mussius Aemilianus, caught and exekutierte him.

Subsequently, Theodotus Memor turned to who planned a revolt; Memor was executed by soldiers of Theodotus 262. For this approach to Theodotus had to answer before Gallienus, but eventually praised him for his decisive intervention.

Due to the reliable information at Petros Patrikios is to assume that Memor his revolt was never able to put it into practice and was not proclaimed rival emperor.
