Memory institution

Memory institution (including memory organization ) is a collective term for institutions that preserve and convey knowledge. These include in particular libraries, museums and archives.

The term was coined in particular digital information in the context of long-term archiving and making available. Despite large differences in location and organizational form and stored in the memory knowledge institutions are being faced with similar problems in terms of technology, financing and copyright. From the perspective of the users of digital offerings of memory institutions, it is irrelevant where the retrieved information originally resided.

In Switzerland in 2008 counted the Federal Office of Culture, the local Federal Archives, the National Library and the National Museum to the Memory federal institutions. Dealing with the digital challenge ( " Memopolicy " ) of these and other Swiss heritage institutions at the federal level, the federal government can not regulate, but he must take responsibility for their ability to do so.
