Mendeley

Mendeley is a reference management software for organizing, sharing and citation of scientific articles and PDF documents. The software is complemented by a web interface. You can manage your own library using a browser and access to statistics that show the current trends in research. Similarly, one can create a personal profile and interact in a social network with other researchers.

The existing scientific PDF documents metadata and source information are automatically imported into your own library. By means of a " bookmarklet " it is possible to import bibliographic information from various on-line library catalogs in your library (eg Google Scholar or PubMed). Likewise, the open COinS standard is supported. In the integrated PDF viewer text can be marked and it can be attached notes. Plug-ins for Microsoft Word and LibreOffice (formerly OpenOffice ) allow the citation of scientific documents and the automatic creation of bibliographies in separate documents. A variety of Zitationsstilen is supported. In addition, bibliographic information for other users can be released, which can be subscribed to, for example, via RSS feed.

Mendeley pursues the goal of a " Last.fm for science '. Scientists are on their library and its research priorities get in the future based recommendations for interesting and relevant articles. Mendeley Award of Plugg.eu "European Start-Up of the Year" in 2009.

Among the investors are Stefan Glänzer, former Executive Chairman and founding investor of Last.fm, who now holds the same function with Mendeley, the former founding developers of Skype, Alejandro Zubillaga, formerly Head of Digital Strategy at Warner Music Group, as well as scientists from the University of Cambridge and Johns Hopkins University.

In April 2013 Mendeley was purchased from Elsevier for a price that is -100 million U.S. dollars between 69 million.
