Menemen Incident

The menemen event ( Turkish Kubilay Olayı ) refers to a bloody incident in the village menemen at Izmir in the Aegean region, which was triggered by religious Islamic fanatics on 23 December 1930. Event is remembered every year by the state and army.

Rebellion

On December 23, 1930 called the Dervish Mehmed, who had previously declared himself the Mahdi, to riots against the fledgling government by gathering a crowd around and calling for the restoration of the caliphate. Soldiers of the local garrison were sent to pacify the revolt. One of the soldiers opened fire on the crowd and a fight broke out. We then headed the Reserve Lieutenant Mustafa Fehmi Kubilay and put the severed head on a pole with a green flag before parading him through the city.

Reaction

The new republican government called for a period of one month state of emergency in the region, arrests of numerous people and put them before the court-martial. There were 37 death sentences.
