Menexenus

Menexenos (Greek: Μενέξενоς ) was one of three sons of the famous Athenian philosopher Socrates ( 469 BC *, † 399 BC) and his younger wife, the proverbial shrew. (Some sources mention Myrto, the second wife of Socrates, as the mother of Menexenos. ) His older brothers were Sophroniscus, which was named after his paternal grandfather, and Lamprokles, of which the writer and historian Xenophon in his memories of Socrates ( Memorabilia ) reported.

Menexenos seems to have received its name after a young student of Socrates, which occurs in several dialogues of Plato ( Phaedo, Lysis, Menexenos ), in Socrates circle has been very popular and personally present when the sentence of death philosopher in prison hemlock had to drink. On the death of his father Menexenos was still a toddler that had to be held by his mother Xanthippe on the arm. So he was probably born around 402 BC. Of his subsequent career, no details are known.
