Menfi

Sciacca is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Sciacca is located about 55 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Agrigento. The city has 12,739 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012), which are predominantly employed in industry, agriculture and knitwear production.

Sciacca, together with the neighboring communities of Sambuca di Sicilia, Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca one of the major wine producing regions of Sicily. Since 1995 there is a separate designation of origin of quality wines ( Denominazione di origine controllata ) for the vineyards of the community with the " DOC Sciacca ".

Other neighboring municipalities are Castelvetrano (TP) and Montevago.

History

Sciacca dates from the time of the Arabs. It was then called Burgiomilluso. The town was built around a fort. Frederick II had to build the ruined fortress again, fell apart the rest of the place. 1698, the place of Diego Tagliava Aragona was newly established. 1968, the place was pulled by an earthquake affected.

Twinning

Sciacca maintains with the following cities twinning:

  • Ettlingen, Baden- Württemberg: a treaty of friendship was established in 2004, since 2007 is the twinning.
  • Morella in Spain, the twinning since 1999
  • Chivilcoy in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires
  • Canelli in the Asti province since 1997

The twinned with Ettlingen has arisen because the mid-20th century, many of guest workers from the region Sciacca came to Ettlingen, since they were offered work there. Many of them found a new home there.
